03 Experience Biography

2017-Present

Southeast Arrow

Staff Reporter

My first role in journalism was the Southeast Arrow, which I volunteered to be a part of before I began journalism classes at Southeast Missouri State University. It has given me countless opportunities and allowed me to dive headlong into interviewing and writing. I’ve learned so many things with the Arrow — which continues as I develop new multimedia skills.

2018-2019

River Radio (KZIM KSIM)

News Anchor/Substitute Host

I first started out in radio in 2018 when I was hired by River Radio to work on news for KZIM KSIM. I would additionally write news for their FM stations as well, and I would voice them on a substitutional basis.

I enjoyed getting the chance to host the KZIM morning show, which allowed me to be more myself than, needless-to-say, the average news broadcast would. I like to think of myself as a “news personality,” to emphasize the humanity in what I do. While I strongly and sternly believe in the impartiality of the press, I want to be a person too, and I want the chance to connect with my audience.

2019-Present

Redhawk Radio Theater

President

My junior year of college I founded the Redhawk Radio Theater. Not only was it my brainchild, I’ve worked as president, creative director, a writer, an actor/talent, the sole audio editor, and music maker. It’s given me to combine two of my chief loves: audio/multimedia and fiction storytelling. I have a deep love of creative writing, and this has just been one of the most recent ways this has taken on a new life.

2019-Present

KRCU

Morning Edition Host/Newscaster/Reporter

When I went on to work for KRCU Public Radio in 2019, it was a great transition to work more in-depth with long-form storytelling. There have been a lot of opportunities for personal development in terms of interview style. I’ve worked on various interviews of any number of subjects. It’s allowed me to jump into the arena of news unlike the news snippets I prior had to put together.

2020-Present

Southeast Arrow

Multimedia Editor

In 2020 I took up a new role with the Southeast Arrow as their Multimedia Editor. During this time, I took charge of the Arrow's audio and video. I've begun innovating the Arrow's audio production by using the Arrow's flagship news podcast to couch audio stories as a newsblock. I've also created the Arrow Podcast Network, a family of shows distributed to the major podcast platforms.

04 education

My college career has not been particularly usual, having two majors and two minors. I'd always had journalism in mind, with broadcast being the goal, and so multimedia journalism became my destination. I also wanted to hone my skills as a writer, particularly with a creative bend, so that made for an obvious minor.

As time went by, I also noticed my interest in going more in-depth studying religious matters and religion itself, which led to my religious studies minor. A good amount of space remained open in my four-year college plan, so I came to identify social science as encompassing many, many areas of interest for me, including politics, history, economics, and more.

With journalism as my principal discipline, I believe that these different areas of studies have given me the ability to deal deftly with a wide array of topics, varying from arts to humanities to social sciences. It's developed my critical thinking skills to be able to engage with diverse topics, and has heightened my awareness of the many lenses with which we can examine the world around us.
